Elements of Plot
5 - 3 - 1 Does this story have a clear exposition that introduces the setting and characters?
5 - 3 - 1 Does this story introduce a conflict or problem right away? In other words, is there something
the main character is looking for, or some obstacle in his or her way?
5 - 3 - 1 Does the story include events or complications that lead to a climax?
5 - 3 - 1 Is there a climax that is the most intense part of the story?
5 - 3 - 1 Does the story include a resolution in which the conflict or problem get resolved or worked
out? In other words, does the character get past the obstacle or find what he or she is looking
for?
Characterization
10 - 7 - 4 Does the story make use of indirect characterization (the character's actions, appearance, speech, thoughts, or the reactions of other characters) to show the characters personalities?
Descriptive Details
5 - 3 - 1 Does the story use sensory details (words that appeal to sight, smell, sound, taste and touch) to make the scenes more real?
Composition
5 - 3 - 1 Is this story original and creative?
5 - 3 - 1 Is the story easy to follow and understand?
5 - 3 - 1 Is the story mostly free from spelling and grammar errors?
5 - - - 1 Is the story at least 400 words?
